We are hiring: why you have to work with us!

Harry here, Director of Voodoochilli and today I’m writing this blog to potential candidates to our latest hire: Front-end developer / HTML developer here at Voodoochilli. If you are one of those people, then read on as I want to explain why you should send in your CV and consider a job here with us at Voodoochilli.

Firstly, you may be wondering why I’m writing this at all. It is rather unusual for the boss of a company to reach out in this way. We are incredibly lucky to be working in a beautiful county where the economy is growing, house prices are reasonable and the quality of life is great. One thing Herefordshire lacks however is a steady flow of talent for digital and new media. This is something we want to change at Voodoochilli. Although just a relatively small and close-knit team we have some ambitious plans ahead, and to fulfill them we need more talented people to work with. It is therefore my job to persuade you of the merits of working with us.

Below I have listed the main reasons you should apply for a job with us:

We have a track record of training up our staff.
It is the nature of the beast that with web design and development the staff tend to be younger people with niche, highly sought after skills. This means that generally these people do not stay in any one job for long and this is something we have seen ourselves over the years: staff come and work with us for a year or two, and then move onto bigger and better things. Obviously our aim is to retain good staff but we are incredibly proud of the success stories of developers who have cut their teeth with us and set up their own agencies, or as was the case with our Studio Manager, Rosie, end up moving on to work with the BBC. We take professional development very seriously and offer on the job training, encourage reading, send staff on courses and generally work with our team to improve and help them be the best they can be. My primary goal with staff is to try and unlock untapped potential as this benefits everyone, them, the company and our clients.

It’s a great place to work.
Key to our philosophy is a fun and friendly workplace. Having started out as a freelance developer almost 20 years ago, I know that web design and development can sometimes be incredibly stressful. I want to change that for my staff and we work in a great, relaxing and rewarding environment built to make everyone comfortable, healthy and best able to do their jobs. Web development really can be a rewarding career if done right. The open plan studio space is great, everyone has a rather swanky sit-stand desk and I insist we take regular breaks and walks. Most Fridays we finish early for a few beers and all in all it’s a pretty chilled place to work. Most staff who have moved on often tell me they have never worked anywhere else like it.

I make sure all staff get private health care which not only covers them in case of something going wrong with their health, it also gives them access to eye and private dental meaning upgraded dental treatment and free designer glasses. Talking of health, we have an in-house company gym that you are free to use.

Check out our culture page for more information on what it is like to work with us.

There is serious potential for career progression.
As I mentioned earlier, it is part and parcel of web design and new media agencies that staff turnover is above average. This is mostly down to the fact that any good agency will skill up their staff beyond the position they first held, often giving them access to jobs and salaries they could only have dreamed of before. One way I try to retain staff for as long as possible is to adapt each role as that person grows. On average, staff that stay with us over a year have gained pay increases of 33% within 2 years and it is always my aim to pay my staff what they are worth.

The work is interesting.
If you are anything like me, and you probably are if you are a web developer, then you are motivated by doing interesting work above all else. Well, the good news is we have that covered for you. As your Director, I do the sales stuff, initial client contact and deal with all of that so you don’t have to. Our design team then owns the design phase of the project and will send you complete designs and instructions on what to work with. There will always be a discussion and you will be encouraged to work closely with our designers, and your input will be listened to and valued. When the designs are signed off, then you get to do your thing, with the full support of the rest of the team. We have a broad range of clients as you can see from our portfolio, and there is the opportunity to get into other aspects of what we do such as app development, SEO and numerous other aspects of web development that will help you learn and improve your skills and knowledge.

So that’s it. That’s why I think you should apply for a job here with us today. Go on, you won’t regret it, the worst that can happen is you don’t get the job, and you never know, you may just end up working somewhere you love.
